Moving out

Moving out can be such a hassle.
Over the past 17 years in Hong Kong, we’ve moved quite a bit—five times in total.
It was an adventure, but when you’re not completely satisfied with your home, it’s important to keep searching and never give up.

That’s my motto, and it’s always led to positive outcomes.

This final sixth move is taking us back to Europe (France).

However, we don’t yet know where we’ll ultimately settle since we’ll be traveling around the world during our sabbatical year.
We decided to ship everything to Nico's parents in southern France.
Given the uncertainty about our final destination, we chose to sell or give away 99% of our furniture.

When we first moved to Hong Kong, we were young and carefree.

Over the years, we’ve matured, so we know our new decorating and furniture style will be different when we eventually move into a new home or country.

Movers quotations

We decided to get quotes from three different moving companies.
I had a piece of art to transport, and I learned afterward that Tiger specializes in that.
  1. RELOSMART

  • They were the first to visit our apartment for an assessment. The salesperson was quite efficient. We ended up choosing them after checking their reviews, which were all 5 stars. It was a relief to find they also offered the cheapest quote!

  • It took them 3 months in total from HK to France, at our delivery address. We’re consolidating our cartons with other clients to share the container costs. But I still find it a tad long, especially I had to ask them every single week when would be the approximate scheduled delivery.

  • The communication has been smooth and responsive (when in HK). The movers were friendly and professional, carefully packing our belongings, especially the fragile ceramics, with layers of paper.

  • I was a bit anxious about my piece of art; it will go into a crate, but it wasn’t boxed on-site. They had to protect the piece before moving it to their warehouse.

  •

I was also worried about the TV, but they managed to detach it from the wall without any issues.
It was a miracle, considering the LG workers had broken the 3mm thick TV during installation (they did provide us with a new one afterward).
I took a video of the TV being moved out just in case (for insurance purposes).
So far I don't have much responsivity when it comes to the delivery date...

It did cost around 3300 euros for 6 cbm2 for a grouped container.

        2. SWIFTRELO

  • They were the second company to assess moving costs. The salesperson seemed friendlier and more personable than the one from Relosmart. However, price is what really matters.

  • I was surprised to see they assessed the exact same volume as Relosmart just by questioning us and checking our apartment.

  • Unfortunately, they ended up being more expensive, so we decided to pass, although they were close.

  •     3. CROWN

  • They were the third company to come for the assessment. They were definitely the most professional of the three, being a larger company with their own warehouses.

  • You could see the difference in service, but it comes at a price—they were more expensive than both Relosmart and Swiftrelo.

  • We appreciated their assessment process; they used a tablet to take photos during the visit. Their quotation system was professional, allowing us to view it online through our client account.

  • They also estimated the same volume as the other two companies, and their estimate was spot on—we had only one less carton than their initial quote.

  • Since we sold most of our belongings and are only shipping souvenirs collected from our travels, some clothing, and art, we didn’t want to overspend on the relocation.

  • Stay tuned for the rest of our sabbatical year.
