Backing up my Iphone 16 Pro to my External Hard Drive

Nico is deep into checking out pricing for new electronics for the boat, insurance quotations and so on.

I am more worried about losing my phone while sailing, although I know it is safely secured with the lanyard, but paranoia got the best out of me.

Macbook air Photo transfers

I am a PC girl, and I have recently switched to Mac before leaving HK,  because I thought (wrongly) that it would be easier to transfer my photos, back up my iphone with my Mac.

But so far it has been hell.
The image capture app keeps on disconnecting while transferring photos.
But one improvement is that the Macbook Air does recognize my iphone most of the time when I plug it (unlike on my PC).

I ended up updating the software of the iphone, then updating the software on the Mac.
It helps! But it still disconnects during transfer from time to time.
So for every 4 successful transfers onto external hard drive through image capture app, I have to disconnect my phone and relaunch capture app to resume the backing up work.

Iphone back up on external hard drive

I am reluctant to any subscriptions. The only one I have is my phone subscription, and it's a non-binding one.
So there is no way I am going to pay Apple for the rest of my life to store my cherished photos on icloud.
Especially since I own a 1T iphone. I'm a savage when it comes to taking photos (now I need to start taking more videos, so it can only get worse from this point onward)

And of course, you Macbook will not allow you to back up on an external drive.
You would need to back up on your SSD, which is nearly impossible since I only have 512 gb.

So just like I did with my PC, I started to get tutorials to tweak my way into backing up my iphone onto my external hard drive.

Here is a tutorial on Youtube that I used and that works!
I had some hard time localizing the Mobilesync folder but it is under your user name.

And yes it works, in no time I created a path to trick the Mac into saving my iphone backups onto my external hard drive.

If I could make it, you can!

I am now patiently waiting for the backup to happen.
HOWEVER, what I didn't anticipate is that it would wipe out the 2 older backups I had on my Backup folder that I did save during my PC time...
Not that I want to keep all back ups... but I would feel safer to have old backups...
Hopefully I will never have to restore my phone! Cross fingers.
