Leucate, France

This is the first official stopover of our sabbatical from the boat.

(Well, we went to Gruissan, but that didn’t really count! 😊)

Our friends from Albi came to visit us on our boat—they were our first visitors!
They heard we were in Narbonne, so they stayed at their vacation home not far from Narbonne Plage this week-end, so they invited us to join them in Leucate.

We happily accepted. The weather had been dreadful ever since the in-laws left, so a little getaway was very welcome.

We’d been to Port Leucate before to check out boats, but we’d never explored the village itself.

It’s a charming, vibrant place, especially for a winter month.

Everyone was gathered at the town square, enjoying a drink as the sun finally made an appearance.

There are some highly sought-after restaurants and patisseries just around the corner. The village has a Parisian vibe but within the setting of a tiny, colorful community.

Fabienne and Jean-Marie prepared a wonderful vegetarian lunch for the occasion.

Afterward, we set out to hike the Leucate Plateau. It used to be covered with vineyards, but not anymore—it’s now a Natura 2000 site.
No one can live there, and the vineyards are closing one by one.

You’ll find blossoming almond trees and wild thyme, which we picked and later used for dinner.
The plateau leads to stunning cliffs, a rare feature in the Mediterranean landscape.

We walked 5 km from their house to La Franqui, a lovely village with a large sandbar where people kite surf.

It wasn’t hot, but we still treated ourselves to ice cream by the beach when we arrived.

We returned home happy but tired from the hike. Another beautiful dinner awaited us.
Before eating, we played Skyjo and enjoyed a joyful apéro.

The next morning, we visited the ruins of the castle overlooking the village before heading out.

From up there, you get a breathtaking 360-degree view of Leucate.

It was a short but memorable weekend with Fabienne and Jean-Marie.
They are truly amazing hosts! We’re spoiled every time we stay with them, whether in Leucate or Albi. Can’t wait for our next meet-up!
