April 2025: Budget report
April 2025 overview
April marked our third-highest spending month so far, largely due to ongoing boat renovations. Purchasing equipment for the boat remains our biggest expense, as we continue to make upgrades here and there. Adding to the costs, it was also Easter holiday month, which brought plenty of family fun! Our son and his family joined us, leading to lots of outings and extra spending.
In total, we spent €4,863 this month.
Looking ahead, we expect equipment costs to gradually decrease over the coming months as the boat gets closer to its final shape.
April 2025 details
Equipment purchases still account for a significant portion of our budget, but we’re also spending more time at marinas than originally planned. Honestly, I don’t mind too much—there’s something comforting about the convenience and community of marina life!
April 2025 vs Budget
With 67% of our €20,000 budget already spent, we’ve shelled out €10,953 so far, primarily on equipment (€7,325) and repairs. While we’re still within our overall budget, some unexpected expenses have thrown us for a loop.
Case in point: we hadn’t planned on replacing four batteries, and we still need to purchase solar panels and swap out the standing rigging (€7,000–€9,000). That last one is a biggie, especially since Nico’s dreaming of a transatlantic crossing—something I’m not exactly thrilled about!

Looking back, I can see where my budgeting went off course.
Repairs and maintenance? Underestimated.
Miscellaneous expenses? I was unprepared for how many costs wouldn’t neatly fit into a category.
Worst of all, I misjudged our harbor expenses. I’d assumed we’d spend more on flights and hotels for getaways, allocating most of our budget there. Instead, we’re spending way more time at marinas than planned, and our €2,000 marina budget is nearly tapped out.

I knew I wouldn't get the budgeting right anyways!
Apart from the boat, so far it seems that equipping and repairing the boat is draining 15% of the money.
Food is the second biggest budget (5%) followed by transportation (mainly train tickets).
Usually when I haven't see the land for days, I tend to crave more when I see civilization...
