May 2025: Budget report
May 2025 overview
April was our fourth-highest spending month to date, driven by ongoing boat renovations and unexpected setbacks.Total spending reached €4,675 for the month.

April 2025 details
This month, we faced several challenges:
- Travel costs: We returned to Paris, incurring additional expenses.
- Anchor loss: We lost our anchor and 15–18 meters of chain in St. Tropez, requiring us to cut the chain.
- Dinghy damage: Water leakage damaged the dinghy, causing the battery to fail, which added €900 in unplanned expenses to be spread across May and June.
- Standing rigging replacement: We are currently stationed in Hyères for a planned standing rigging replacement, costing €6,000, with payments split between May and June.

May 2025 vs Budget
With four months into our sabbatical, we’ve spent 71% of our total budget, leaving €30,000 for the remaining nine months.
Repairs and Maintenance Budget:
- Original allocation: €20,000 for repairs and equipment (set after purchasing the boat under budget).
- Spent to date: €13,827 on repairs and equipment.
- Remaining: €6,173.
However, upcoming expenses threaten to strain this budget:
- Standing rigging: €4,500 remaining to be paid in June.
- Anchor chain replacement: Estimated at €200.
- Dinghy battery replacement: Estimated at €285.
- Potential weather vane purchase: Nico is considering a €700 weather vane, which was not budgeted.
Total projected expenses: Approximately €5,485 (€4,500 + €200 + €285 + €700), leaving only €688 (€6,173 - €5,485) in the repair and equipment budget.
While we may remain within our equipment budget, the margin is tight and overall budget.
With only four months into our sabbatical, unexpected expenses like those in April could continue to arise, requiring careful financial management to sustain the remaining nine months.
